It has become increasingly recognized that animals are often just what the doctor ordered. Children, teens, adults and the aged, whether terminally ill, emotionally disturbed, physically or mentally challenged, isolated and depressed, incarcerated or otherwise institutionalized, can all benefit from the healing powers of animals.

PACK Sanctuary is an animal shelter in Taiwan that cares for over 400 animals, the majority of which are canine. PACK stands for “People for Animal Care and Kindness” and is committed not only to the rescue, care and rehoming of animals but also to providing service to the community. As part of this focus, PACK created an Animal Assisted Therapy Program (AATP) that offers a beneficial service to both animals and people.

PACK 是 “People for Animal Care and Kindness” 的縮寫, 意思是”為了照顧動物和做善事而存在的人們”.

The premise is simple: the bond between humans and animals reaches beyond words, and an animal’s presence can offer a powerful level of comfort and companionship that is unconditional.

Meet Lucy 露西

When Taiwan’s Dr. Dog turned Lucy down as a candidate for their animal-assisted therapy program because of her disability, PACK knew it was time to start its own therapy program. PACK’s first active therapy dog, Lucy, brings joy into the lives of everyone she comes in contact with.

A Beacon Of Inspiration

Lucy lost her ability to walk after a car accident more than two years ago. A bright and gentle girl with an exceptional love of meeting new people and an enthusiasm for life, her disability is in fact, an inspiration to others with disabilities or challenges of their own.

Positive Outcomes For Participant’s

Animals can serve many important functions to benefit the emotional and physical health of diverse populations including the elderly. They offer uncomplicated affection-on-demand and are ice-breaking catalysts to communications and laughter.

Some people may be precluded from activities due to language barriers or because they are unpopular or physically unattractive; but animals make no such distinctions and wag their tails and cuddle indiscriminately, regardless of a person’s language, impairment or attitude.

Touch is a powerful sense and the nuzzling provided by an animal can be very beneficial, especially for those whom may have lost their eyesight or hearing by creating a tactile stimulation they can respond positively to.

Studies have shown physical contact and affection from an animal can ease anxiety issues, increase physical mobility and help improve cognitive skills and self-esteem. While talking to and stroking an animal, promotes relaxation and lowers blood pressure.

Animals can help deinstitutionalize a facility and provide a more natural, home-like environment, helping to not only improve the lives of participants, but also staff morale and families’ perceptions.
